Mexico Plays South Africa in the Opening Game, June 11

Planning to root for the Mexican World Cup team at the World Cup but you haven’t managed to score a flight to South Africa yet? What’s the best alternative? Rooting for your favorite team in Mexico while wearing a Mexico soccer jersey !

Just image a perfect night in a bar on the beach, sipping beer and rooting for Mexico along with your friends, while your loved one is enjoying a relaxing spa treatment or soaking up the sun. Ahh, the life!

The opening game is just two days away but you can still bag one of the flights to Mexico . Granted, you’ll be paying a premium for booking the flight so late but even so, the flights aren’t that expensive. After all, it’s the low season in Mexico!

Price tag? Assuming you’ll be staying only for the group matches – arrive on June 13 and depart on June 23 – and you plan to stay in Cancun for the entire time, you’ll be paying $468 (JetBlue Airways, direct flight) for the round trip flight (out of New York). Flights from my Miami are cheaper ($331 RT on American Airlines).

You can find accommodation in hotels starting at $55 per night. Or you can choose to stay in a hostel for prices starting at $18 per night per bed in a private room (breakfast included).

Overall, the vacation won’t cost an arm and a leg and you can add a lot of activities to your days so you definitely won’t get bored on the days when there aren’t soccer matches to watch. Cancun is an excellent vacation destination year round and you can enjoy water sports, check out the outdoor markets or explore Isla Mujeres.

The Mayan vestiges aren’t far away either , so you can easily organize day trips to explore several of the important sites, including Chichen Itza.
