Getting from Cancun to Belize

Belize is a country in Central America, well known as a beach destination and also preferred by honeymooners . Aside from soaking up the sun on the Caribbean beaches, you can also try jungle trekking and visit the Mayan ruins.

Belize shares a border with Mexico and it’s not uncommon for traveler to fly into Cancun and then travel to Belize City. That happens because Cancun International Airport receives a lot more flights from various cities in the world compared to Belize City, which receives a limited number of flights from the USA and other countries in the area.

Quick summary

Unless you want to drive, the only option to get from Cancun to Belize City is to take the bus; actually, buses because you’ll have to change them in Playa del Carmen and Chetumal.

Flights from Cancun (airport code: CUN) to Belize

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) serves the largest city in Belize, Belize City. Only Maya Island Air used to offer direct flights from Cancun, but these flights aren’t listed on the airline’s official website anymore. On large booking engines (i.e. Kayak) the only options are connecting flights which start at US$637 per person, one way. And the travel time (due to the layovers) is almost 17 hours.

Buses from Cancun to Belize

The cheap way to get from Cancun to Belize is by bus. Unfortunately, there isn’t a direct bus between Cancun and Belize City, so you should follow the steps:

1. Cancun to Playa del Carmen

Get on the bus to Playa del Carmen either from the airport or from downtown Cancun. The travel time is 45-55 min and the price is from 65 pesos (about US$7) per person, one way. Buses from downtown Cancun are operated by ADO . There are buses every 15 min (until 9 p.m.)

2. Playa del Carmen to Chetumal

Buses from Playa del Carmen to Chetumal are also operated by ADO. There are buses almost every hour between the two cities. A one way ticket costs 226 pesos (about US$18).

3. Chetumal to Belize City

From Chetumal take another bus to Belize City. The travel time is 3 hours and there are two Guatemalan companies which offer connections. Buses leave at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., respectively and the one way ticket is US$10 per person. The national Belize bus company also offers connections between the two cities, on both regular and express buses. Tickets start at BZ$9 one way, on the regular buses. There are 6 departures per day, the first being at 6:45 a.m. and the travel time is 3 ½ h for the regular buses.

There are also express buses between the two cities. The travel time is also 3 hours but some of the buses are first class. Tickets cost BZ$16 per person. There are three departures per day, first being at 10:45 a.m.

Driving from Cancun to Belize

Renting a car and driving from Cancun to Belize can be a lovely experience. Just remember to ask the rental company whether you can take the car over the border. The driving distance is 521 km and you should be able to cover it in less than 6 ½ h. Since you’ll be passing by Chichen Itza and Uxmal , you can plan to stop for some sightseeing.
